Ajmer, an ancient pilgrimage town is situated on the banks of the Ana Sagar Lake at an altitude of 486 meters above sea level. Ajmer which is about 130 kms from Jaipur, covers a total area of 55.76 square km. Historically, Ajmer had considerable strategic importance and was sacked by Mohammed Ghori on one of his periodic forays from Afghanistan. Later it became a favorite residence of the mighty Mughal. Ajmer is a major center for Muslim pilgrims during the fast of Ramzaan, and has some impressive Muslim architecture. It houses the Dargah or tomb of the popular 13th century Sufi saint, Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti. The city also boasts of a number of monuments dating back to the Mughal era.

Tourist Places to See/Visit in Ajmer

Tomb of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti, a revered Sufi Saint of the 12th century AD, this is the holiest of all Muslim dargahs in the country. Throughout the year, the dargah welcomes a lot of pilgrims from all over the country and outside, but during the festival of Urs, it is a sight to look at. Different sections of the dargah are gifts of different emperors, be it the dome, the pillars, or the windows, and a Mughal art can be seen in the architecture.

Taragarh Fort
A splendid hill fort, that overlooks at the entire city, Taragrah is one of the oldest forts in the country built by king Ajaypal Chauhan. The fort has been an important military center in war times, especially during British Raj. Here you can see a great work of art as well as a remembrance of Indian history.

This beautiful structure had been a Hindu Vaishnava temple till 1153, but has been turned into a mosque in 1193 by Qutbuddin Aybak. Situated on the Taragarh hill, the structure is a beautiful example of Indo- Persian art, where the pillars, walls, all are inscribed with Naskh and Kufic scripts.

Ana Sagar Lake
This 12th century man made lake, was constructed by king Anaji, the grandfather of Prithviraj Chauhan. The lake is also surrounded by the exquisite garden, built by Emperor Jehangir, known as Daulat Bagh. You can also take a walk in the walkway constructed between the banks of the lake and the gardens, taking beautiful views of both.

Foy Sagar Lake
Constructed under a famine relief project, by an English engineer, Mr Foy, this picturesque artificial lake got its name from its constructor itself. Constructed somewhere in the later half of the 19th century, here you can enjoy beautiful and serene views of the Aravalli hills and birds flying overhead.

This small town is a popular place where a lot of Hindu pilgrims come to visit the sacred town of Lord Brahma. The 14th century Pushkar temple dedicated to Brahma and the iconic Pushkar lake, are some favorite spots in the town. And the liveliest of the days here are those when the grand Pushkar Fair is organized.
